Born in Lynwood, California and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, James received his undergraduate degree and teaching credentials from the University of California, San Diego. His first teaching assignment was for the San Diego Unified School District. Shortly after marriage, the Brescias relocated to Santa Cruz County. James taught mathematics at E.A.
